Cholesterol Screening
Lipid / Cholesterol Screening
At well child check ups your child may need to have their cholesterol tested. Starting at 2 years of age, we will test your child’s cholesterol level if there are any risk factors or concerns. The risk factors include the following:
- Either parent with a cholesterol above 24
- Parent or Grandparent with a history of premature coronary vascular disease prior to age 55
- Unknown family history (adopted)
- Other risk factors present including, but not limited to obesity, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
We perform the cholesterol test in the office. If it is elevated, we may have your child return for a fasting lipid profile, which includes a total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels. This test, which we also perform in our office, is helpful in order for us to understand your child’s risk for premature cardiovascular disease and to develop a plan for intervention if needed. Please ask your practitioner about this testing if you have any questions.
